After all, students work all day long on their lessons. How much is truly necessary to be done at home? How can parents help their child with homework success? Our teachers aim to accomplish as much as possible during the school day to avoid your child having to spend long hours in the evenings doing extra assignments. While academic success often requires additional work outside of the classroom, children need to be free to live well-balanced lives, enjoy time with family, and get plenty of rest and play time throughout the week. According to the National Education Association, children should have about 10 minutes of homework per grade level. For example, kindergarteners should have 10 minutes; first graders 20, and so on. This seems to be a good target. There are some other factors that may come to play if your child is spending more time than this. We will discuss some homework helps in an upcoming blog post.

Establish Routines

Children do best with established routines centered around priorities. Parents can help establish these daily routines around homework and study habits. Establishing a defined time and place for school work helps children remain in the right mindset for accomplishing work outside of school. You may wish to have a designated reset time to play and relax for 30 minutes to an hour when returning home from school for the day. Try setting a time for children to hear. When the timer goes off, children can go to the kitchen table or other designated place to complete their work. This should be in proximity to parents for supervision and help keeping students on task.

Be an Example

You may want to do some of your own study and quiet reading during this study time. Teaching your child to have time for such things without extra noise and distraction can give them a lifelong skill. After all, it is in these quiet times, they can grow in the Lord as well as learn to be at peace with being still. “Be still, and know that I am God: I will be exalted among the heathen, I will be exalted in the earth. (Psalm 46:10, KJV).

Encourage Independence

Guiding children to responsibility and independence will give them tools for life. Encourage children to work on their own. Your child will only receive the benefit of work if they are accomplishing it on their own. Praise for effort is encouraging. Reward of family or fun time is a great motivator to complete work and move on to other activities.

Keep in Touch

It’s important to keep in touch with your child’s teacher when you are experiencing concerns with homework at home or other school-related concerns. Be sure to ask for a meeting or send an email to touch base when things are not as you think they should be. We are all on the same team to help guide your child in their spiritual and academic growth.

Share Your Thoughts

What are your thoughts about homework and establishing routines for your family?
